The Marshall County Historical Society is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2008!
Come join us for an exciting
calendar of events
- something new each month.
As
part of our 50th Anniversary
Celebration we will be honoring
past and present Board of Trustees
members with an Open House on
June 19th. The
museum will be staying open for
special hours from 4:00-6:00
p.m. Everyone is welcomed to
come and take a tour of the museum,
enjoy refreshments and help us
appreciate this special group of
people who make the Museum and other
activities of the Historical Society
possible.
We are located on Michigan Street
in downtown Plymouth, Indiana, in the Lauer Building. We house the historic artifacts and research archives of Argos, Bourbon, Bremen, Culver, Donaldson, Inwood, Koontz Lake, LaPaz, Plymouth,
Teegarden Tippecanoe, Tyner and the surrounding areas. Come visit us!
The Main Level houses our changing exhibits and special event programming.
Bring your family and browse the museum on your own or ask for a guided tour. Try out the “hands on” area for kids and be sure to look for our open houses and special activities each quarter and during school breaks.
Our Lower Level is the Mary Brumbaugh Library for genealogical and historic research of all kinds. Our Archive Manager and Research Library Specialist are available to provide customized research for you or they can assist you while you perform your own research
The Upper Level is the restored professional offices of the Lauer Building, featuring skylight ceilings and oak trimmed corridors. Our permanent collection is displayed in this architectural setting and tells the stories of our county and its people.
Upcoming Events----- As we highlight different areas of our County, May 1st, we
opened an exhibit featuring Bremen High School. Just in time for a class reunion or early summer guests, our exhibit
highlights lots of fun pictures, sports and activity memorabilia, and stories from former teachers and students.
The Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating 150 years of service to its community in 2008. In order to honor that event and pay tribute to all branches of our Plymouth Fire Department, we
opened "With Bravery and
Commitment" on April 4th. The exhibit will continue through the end of the year.
The
museum will host its own Kiddies'
Day! on July 19th from 10:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. All children are
invited to participate in a costume
contest, eat popcorn, have their
faces painted and join in a parade
to commemorate the very 1st Kiddies'
Day in the nation. It happened
right here in Marshall County in
1915.
Announcements
-----
The TEA grant has been approved for $680,000! This money will be used for the future Historic Crossroads Center in the new building. We are all very excited with this announcement and of the things to come for the museum.
The new building will allow the Genealogical/Research Department to be moved from the lower level and increase the amount of storage space, as well as exhibit space. The number of visitors to the museum has grown from 450 in 1958 to 5,000 in 2002, not including school and group tours. The number of artifacts has also increased from 11,000 in 1993 to currently over 20,000.
